Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 8, 2026
CalzAI is built to be private by design. This policy explains what the app does and doesn't do with your information, in plain language.
The short version: Your meal diary, goals, and history stay on your device, and CalzAI needs no account. To identify food from a photo, the app uses AI: by default it sends one compressed photo to our server, which passes it to Google's Gemini for recognition only — we don't store it. Prefer maximum privacy? Switch to on-device recognition in Settings and no photo ever leaves your iPhone. We don't sell or share your personal data, show ads, or track you.

1. Who we are
CalzAI ("the app", "we", "us", or "our") is developed and published by Axain Studios. This Privacy Policy applies to the CalzAI iOS application. By using the app, you agree to the practices described here.
2. How food recognition works
Identifying a food from a photo can happen in one of two ways. You choose which in the app under Settings → Food Recognition:
- Cloud AI (default): a single, compressed copy of your photo is sent securely to our server, which forwards it to Google's Gemini AI to identify the food. This is used only to recognize what the food is; the result returned to your device is a food name. We do not store the photo on our server. See Section 3 for details.
- On-device: recognition runs entirely on your iPhone using Apple's Vision framework, and no photo ever leaves your device. Choose this mode if you prefer that nothing is transmitted.
In both modes, the calorie and nutrition values are calculated on your device from a nutrition database bundled inside the app — those numbers are never determined by the cloud. Your meal diary, goals, and history are always stored only on your device (see Section 4).
3. Cloud AI recognition & Google Gemini
When Cloud AI is enabled (the default), the compressed food photo is transmitted to our recognition server and then to the Gemini API operated by Google LLC, which acts as our processing partner solely to return a food name. Google processes the image under its applicable terms and privacy commitments for the Gemini API. Depending on the service tier in use, Google may retain submitted content for a limited period for purposes such as operating the service, preventing abuse, and improving its products.
We send no account, name, email, or device identifier alongside the photo, so the image is not linked to your identity by us. Because this processing may occur on servers located in the United States or other countries, using Cloud AI involves an international transfer of that single photo for the recognition request.
If you would rather no photo ever leave your device, switch Food Recognition to On-device in Settings. Recognition still works offline, though it may be less accurate for some dishes.
4. Information the app stores on your device
To make the app useful, CalzAI saves certain information locally on your iPhone using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData). This data remains under your control and is removed when you delete the app. It includes:
- Meal diary: the foods you log, their estimated calories and macros, meal type, portion size, timestamps, and a small thumbnail image of each meal.
- Goals & preferences: your calorie and macro targets and app settings.
- App state: local counters such as your free-tier scan usage.
If you have enabled iCloud backup for your device, this on-device data may be included in your encrypted device backup under your own Apple account, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We have no access to those backups.
5. What we do not collect
- We do not require or collect a name, email address, or account.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, and we do not build a profile of you.
- We do not retain your food photos — in Cloud AI mode a photo is passed to our recognition partner for that single request and is not stored by us (see Section 3).
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with data brokers.
6. Apple Health (HealthKit)
CalzAI offers an optional integration with Apple Health. This feature is turned off by default. If — and only if — you choose to enable it, the app will ask for your permission and may write your logged dietary energy and nutrients to Apple Health so your data stays consistent across your health apps.
Health data is handled by Apple's HealthKit on your device. CalzAI does not transmit HealthKit data off your device, and we never use it for advertising. You can revoke this permission at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
7. Subscriptions & purchases
CalzAI offers an optional subscription that unlocks unlimited scanning and premium features. Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit. We do not receive or store your payment card details. Apple provides us with anonymized transaction and subscription-status information needed to deliver and validate your purchase, subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. To manage or cancel a subscription, use iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
8. Advertising & tracking
CalzAI does not display third-party advertising and includes no advertising or analytics SDKs. We do not track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app does not use Apple's advertising identifier. Development is funded by the optional subscription described above, not by ads.
9. Notifications
With your permission, CalzAI can send local meal reminders. These notifications are scheduled on your device and are not sent through our servers. You can turn them off at any time in the app or in iOS Settings → Notifications.
10. Children's privacy
CalzAI is not directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The only content transmitted off the device is a food photo used for recognition when Cloud AI is enabled, which is not linked to any identity.
11. Your choices & rights
Because your data lives on your device, you are in control of it:
- Delete individual meals from within the app's diary at any time.
- Erase all app data by deleting CalzAI from your iPhone.
- Choose on-device recognition in Settings → Food Recognition so no photo is ever sent off your device.
- Manage permissions (Camera, Photos, Health, Notifications) in iOS Settings.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA. We store no personal data on our own systems, and photos sent for Cloud AI recognition are not retained by us or linked to your identity, so we generally hold no personal information to access, correct, or delete on your behalf. If you have questions about your rights, contact us using the details below.
12. Data security
Your information benefits from the security protections built into iOS, including device encryption and app sandboxing. No method of electronic storage is completely secure, but keeping your data on-device — rather than on a central server — meaningfully reduces the risk of large-scale exposure.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes will be reflected in an updated app release. Your continued use of CalzAI after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
